Port Harcourt Base Comedian, Bethram Emerges Winner of Comedian Alibaba’s Spontaneity Contest 2022

Port Harcourt based Nigerian Spontaneous Comedian, BETHRAM, emerges winner of Comedian Alibaba’s Spontaneity Contest 2022.

The Law graduate from the Rivers State University – RSU, Kpakol Bethram emerges the winner at the finals of the 2022 Spontaneity Contest during Alibaba’s January 1st Concert at the Eko Hotel & Suites, which tested the ability of mostly up and coming comedians to create jokes on the spur of the moment.

Trust me, it’s not easy to make people laugh, especially in a country like Nigeria where everyone seem to be angry with everything, and everybody. But then, over the years we’ve witnessed the emergence of so many talented Comedians. But then, just as the Holy book says; “many are called, but only few are chosen”. Yes, so many comedians out there, but only few are creative and spontaneous.

That you can make people laugh doesn’t qualify you to be a Comedian – even clowns makes people laugh. I’ve come across posts where comedians are ranting over stolen jokes, and comic materials. And I’ve also attended events where I’m like; “wait, I don hear this joke before oh. No be so so and so crack this joke for that event that day?”Well, I guess that’s why the Comedy Father, Alibaba, came up with this initiative to fish out spontaneous, and extraordinary comedians from the crowd.

According to a 2016 publication by The Guardian Nigeria, Alibaba explained why he came up with the initiative.

In his words (as reported by The Publication);

“The show, SPONTANEITY came as a need to take the comedy industry to the next level; the standards are being watered down. Comedians are repeating jokes, comedians are stealing jokes, comedians are going back to archives, picking people’s jokes and re-telling them, comedians are taking jokes from foreign comedians and re-telling them like Nigerian jokes.

To be sincere, stand-up comedy is a very difficult art form because when you tell the joke, if it is not very nice, you get immediate reaction. If you tell and they (audience) don’t laugh, that’s it. And we thought that the best way is to go by what we call the Holy Grail of stand-up comedy, which is Spontaneity.

"Spontaneity" is a quarterly event, which sees 12 comedians slug it out with each other for the first three positions. The top three comedians from the four editions have a chance to compete at the grand finale, which holds during Alibaba’s January 1st show.

ABOUT THE WINNER

He also disclosed that his first major comedy gig was Akpororo Vs Akpororo in 2016. That was the first big platform that catapulted his comedy career.He also went ahead to explain where he pulls his inspiration from, and his style of comedy.

In his words;

"my inspiration come from my environment and the society at large.Most of my jokes reflect around what’s happening in the society, Nigeria and the world at large. I do reality jokes majorly. And by that I mean jokes that the audience can easily relate with, joke like an abstract joke that may be funny but obviously not real...It's been a long ride for the Comedy Champ, trust me. And I'm happy it's paying off"

Congratulations to BethramOfficial once again! 2022 is our year! Port Harcourt to the world!!!!!
